The Sorting Hierarchy
The vessel is not the whole of consciousness. It is the living instrument through which consciousness encounters embodied reality. The body receives physical and social signals, sorts them through inherited and learned structures, and broadcasts the result through attention, emotion, speech, and action. Ordinary bidirectional coupling is documented. The extension of this transceiver model to nonlocal consciousness is the central modeled claim.
The instrument is not unitary. It is a parliament of nested sorting operations: enzymes discriminate substrates, ion channels gate charge, cells coordinate tissue form, immune systems distinguish self from threat, nervous systems rank relevance, and attention selects what reaches action. No single operation contains the person. Their coordination produces the experienced self.
Living order is expensive. Organisms maintain gradients, repair boundaries, preserve memory, and export entropy by consuming free energy. Landauer’s principle places a minimum cost on logically irreversible information erasure; it does not make every biological distinction a literal one-bit reset. Its discipline is exact: memory, discrimination, and repeated sorting have physical costs. Exhaustion, chronic stress, inflammation, sleep loss, trauma, and continuous novelty can therefore alter what the instrument detects and how accurately it responds.
The Work reorganizes this parliament around the witness: the capacity to observe an impulse without granting it immediate authority. Traditions enter through body, breath, attention, prayer, contemplation, dream, or ordeal. Their methods and cosmologies differ, but the practical test is stable. Does the work increase discernment, integration, and voluntary action, or install a new dependency that speaks in the voice of liberation?
The completed vessel is not a closed crystal. It is a quasicrystal: ordered without sterile repetition, coherent without rigidity, and sovereign without pretending to be finished.
