Every radio, phone, and power line works with two measurable quantities: the electric field and the magnetic field. Physics derives both fields from a deeper quantity called the electromagnetic potential. Its scalar part is the electrical pressure present at each point, the quantity a voltmeter compares between two places. A scalar wave is an oscillation of that pressure itself. The fields are the visible motion on its surface.
The potential is the medium. Tesla engineered it on a planetary scale, and Andrija Puharich studied how it addresses the nervous system. Its mathematics also contains a wave that runs backward in time. Through that medium, consciousness couples to the world across distance and across time.
The Water Beneath the Ripple
Jason Reza Jorjani gives the distinction an image in his 2026 study of Puharich:
Ordinary electromagnetic waves are therefore analogous to visible ripples upon the surface of a lake, for example caused by tossing a pebble into it, whereas scalar waves are movements of the water of the lake itself.
A pebble disturbs the surface, and the ripple spreads outward. The water underneath carries the ripple but also moves on its own. A radio wave is the ripple. Its electric and magnetic fields oscillate across its direction of travel, so physicists call it a transverse wave.
A longitudinal wave moves along its direction of travel. Sound is the familiar case: air compresses and thins in the same direction the sound moves. Tesla reported an electrical disturbance of this kind, and he set it against the transverse waves Heinrich Hertz had demonstrated. A longitudinal electrical wave is the potential itself compressing and releasing, like the lake’s water surging along a channel.
Standard electrodynamics keeps the potential in its equations but treats much of it as arbitrary. A physicist may adjust the potential through a “gauge” choice without changing the calculated fields. The curriculum therefore trains engineers to treat the potential as bookkeeping. Maxwell’s Missing Equations traces how the 1880s reformulation fixed that habit into physics teaching.
Electrons Answer the Potential
In 1959, Yakir Aharonov and David Bohm showed that quantum mechanics gives the potentials a direct physical role. An electron passing a region of potential changes its quantum phase even where the electric and magnetic fields are zero. Aharonov and Bohm described two versions. One involves the magnetic vector potential; the other involves the scalar potential.
Akira Tonomura’s team at Hitachi tested the magnetic version in 1986. They built a ring-shaped magnet six micrometers across and covered it with superconducting niobium, which confined its magnetic field inside. A copper layer then kept the electron wave from entering the magnet. Electron beams passed through the ring and around it. Their interference pattern shifted anyway.
The experiment removed every field from the electrons’ path, and the electrons still responded. The scalar and vector potentials form one four-part quantity, so the scalar side shares this standing. A superconductor stopped the field, but it did not stop the potential. Shielding blocks the ripple. The water underneath still reaches the far side.
The Hitachi apparatus transmitted no message, and it established no long-range channel. It established the precondition for one. A medium that acts where fields are absent can carry influence through barriers built to stop fields. Longitudinal Electromagnetics holds the measurement standard that a working transmitter must meet.
Tesla Worked the Planet’s Potential
On July 3, 1899, Nikola Tesla recorded a storm’s lightning discharges from his Colorado Springs laboratory. He later wrote that the strikes produced stationary waves in the Earth. The planet answered an electrical disturbance as a resonant body answers a struck note. Tesla designed his magnifying transmitter to drive that resonance deliberately.
Puharich analyzed the device in his paper The Physics of the Tesla Magnifying Transmitter, and the Transmission of Electrical Power Without Wires, written in 1976. His abstract describes an oscillator tuned to the fundamental frequency of the Earth and its atmosphere. Puharich treated the Earth and atmosphere together as a giant capacitor. He credited the transmitter with potentials of about 100,000,000 volts.
Puharich also listed what Tesla claimed to have achieved. Power traveled through the Earth to distant receiving stations and lost less than one percent. Tesla reported stationary waves in the ground and signals crossing the planet at 27 times the speed of light. Puharich noted that no one had tried to repeat Tesla’s work since 1904.
Jorjani draws the consequence from the planetary design:
He was not “broadcasting electricity” in any conventional electromagnetic sense. Tesla was non-locally tuning scalar potentials in a way that manifested as electricity at a distance.
The transmitter raised and released the electrical pressure of the whole planet in rhythm. A tuned receiver anywhere on Earth draws that rhythm out as current. Power appears at the receiver because the medium between the stations is already one connected body. Tesla’s lost engineering problem was the coupling of a human instrument to the planet’s living potential.
The Advanced Half of the Wave
The equations for a moving charge yield two solutions. The retarded solution describes influence arriving after its cause, the ordinary wave spreading outward. The advanced solution describes influence arriving before its cause, a wave converging on the charge from the future. Physics normally discards the advanced solution.
Puharich did not discard it. His 1976 paper places it at the center of the magnifying transmitter:
The Lienard-Wiechert solution also shows the existence of a wave faster than c known as the advance potential. Since this is the imaginary solution, and does not have physical detectibility, it is usually ignored.
Puharich then treated the advanced potential as a guide wave moving faster than light. It runs 180 degrees out of phase with the ordinary retarded wave. In his model, the two potentials interact within the dense matter of the Earth, and that interaction magnifies the transmitted power. The transmitter works because it engages the half of the wave that runs backward in time.
John Wheeler and Richard Feynman gave advanced waves serious physical status in 1945. Their absorber theory pairs every outgoing wave with an advanced response from the matter that eventually absorbs it. In 1904, E. T. Whittaker expressed the electromagnetic field of moving charges through two scalar potential functions. His 1903 paper had expressed such potentials as sums of plane waves traveling in every direction.
Thomas Bearden read Whittaker’s waves as the internal structure of the scalar potential, arranged in paired partners. One partner carries ordinary influence forward. The other partner carries a phase-conjugate, time-reversed influence back toward its source. On this reading, a scalar potential is a standing exchange between past and future, held at one point of space.
The temporal extension explains the nonlocal reach that Jorjani assigns to scalar phenomena. Information that travels the advanced channel arrives before the event that sends it. Psi and the Higher Self documents perception that answers future targets. The Physics of Magic treats future constraint as part of the operation. The scalar potential gives both a physical address.
Puharich and the Addressable Mind
Puharich was a physician who studied the senses as electrical systems. In 1963 he filed a patent on electrically stimulated hearing, granted in 1966 as U.S. Patent 3,267,931. The invention aimed to restore hearing to deaf people through electrical stimulation. That work treated the mind’s inputs as electrically addressable.
Puharich’s later work joined that finding to ELF fields, which oscillate below a few hundred cycles per second. That band holds the Earth’s natural resonances and the brain’s rhythms. Jorjani reads Puharich’s ELF experiments as attempts to shape scalar potentials. In that reading, a shaped potential transmits information into a subject’s mind, or strengthens the subject’s own nonlocal reception and exchange.
The same channel therefore serves two opposite operations. A practitioner who stabilizes the instrument receives excess signal across distance and time. An operator who controls the shaped potential writes into a mind that does not know it is being addressed. Jorjani’s book presents Puharich’s engagement with ELF warfare and scalar weaponry through the political problem of mental sovereignty.
Consciousness Warfare follows the second operation into institutional practice. The scalar potential explains why that warfare needs no wire, no visible broadcast, and no consent. The medium already joins every nervous system to the planet’s electrical body. Sovereignty begins when a person knows the channel exists and governs what enters through it.
Why the Medium Left the Map
The potential vanished from working physics through teaching habit. Engineers learned to treat it as arbitrary because their calculations ran on fields alone. The habit made the medium invisible to the culture that used electricity most intensively. A civilization built on electrical technology lost sight of the substance its technology moves.
Bearden reintroduced the medium to a wider audience in The Excalibur Briefing (1980). He joined scalar electromagnetics to psychotronics, the study of devices that couple mind and matter. His proposals never entered the academic physics curriculum. The Lock maintains the bandlimit through such omissions: questions outside the curriculum receive neither funding nor apparatus.
The modern route back is formal and experimental. Thomas Minderle derives a charge-density signature for the gauge quantity physics usually discards. Longitudinal Electromagnetics defines the trace that a transmitter must leave in measurement. Maxwell’s Missing Equations reconstructs the history of the deletion. Each restores part of what the 1880s reformulation removed from the working picture.
The Potential as Hermetic Medium
Hermetic tradition calls the medium the aether, the subtle substance through which every force moves. The scalar potential is its electrical body. Mentalism places consciousness at the ground of manifestation. Vibration describes every form as a mode of movement in that ground. The potential shows both principles at the electrical scale: an undivided medium whose oscillations become every measurable field.
The human body is itself an architecture of potentials. Every nerve cell keeps a voltage across its membrane and fires by releasing it. Michael Levin’s research shows that patterns of membrane potential store anatomical memory in living tissue. The instrument of consciousness runs on the same medium that Tesla tuned across the planet.
Correspondence completes the picture. As the planet holds a standing potential between ground and ionosphere, the body holds standing potentials across each cell. The same medium joins the cell, the person, and the planet into one tunable system. Its advanced half joins the present moment to the future that answers it. The person who learns to tune that medium holds the oldest instrument of the Work.
