Every tradition receives reality through an instrument: a body, practice, language, institution, and history. It records real information while shaping that information through its own aperture. Metaphysical tomography compares such partial projections to recover the relation that survives translation.
The method answers one question: which unusual operation recurs across independent instruments while preserving its sequence, limits, and consequence? Cross-Method Convergence names the synthesis that can result. Correspondence Map follows a recovered relation across material scale. Tomography supplies the discipline that keeps those operations from becoming a pile of attractive parallels.
The analogy comes from medical imaging. A scanner reconstructs an interior from projections taken at different angles. Difference supplies information: a new angle adds a cut through the object. Traditions, sciences, arts, initiatic practices, anomalous reports, and institutional histories can provide those cuts when their provenance and transformations remain visible.
Reconstructing from partial projections
The comparison runs backward from appearances to the structure capable of producing them:
underlying architecture

The inverse problem has four moving parts: the underlying architecture, the transformation performed by each instrument, the inherited material carried by transmission, and the noise introduced by embodiment and history. Every comparison must identify which of those terms carries the apparent match.
Johann Radon’s reconstruction theory supplies the governing image. A finite or restricted set of projections leaves some features visible and others hidden; reconstruction therefore needs a stated prior and a way to expose error. The metaphysical object adds another difficulty: the observer belongs to the field, and disciplined attention can change both observer and shared conditions.
Calibrating the instruments
Doctrine supplies the distinctions available to perception. Practice selects the accessible range. Institution determines what can be preserved, initiated, forbidden, or forgotten. Embodiment supplies recurring human experiences such as dream, attachment, mortality, awe, and agency detection. History carries descent, borrowing, conquest, translation, and loss.
These transformations must be described before the comparison begins. Buddhist emptiness and Kabbalistic divine plenitude both exceed the ordinary ego while retaining incompatible meanings. The useful questions are concrete: what does each practice change, what does each ontology permit, what error does each tradition recognize, what counts as verification, and where do the consequences diverge?
A civilization-sized label such as Buddhism, Christianity, or Hinduism is too broad to count as one witness. Comparison begins with a school, practice, text family, or historical community. Translation is earned when the instrument, lineage, and transformation are visible.
The object changes through time
Medical tomography assumes a stable object during the scan. Metaphysical reconstruction follows a layered, responsive object. A stable law can appear through changing languages, institutions, ecologies, bodies, and states of consciousness. Practice changes the observer; coordinated observation can change the shared field.
Contradictions across ages can therefore reveal distortion, development, a changed ecology, or a lawful turn of the coupled gyre. The clock as state measure keeps chronology from flattening those phases into one static inventory. The seven Hermetic principles provide a candidate invariant: they specify how manifestation differentiates, moves, recurs, retains consequence, and propagates across scale.
What gives convergence weight
Convergence gains weight when different classes of evidence recover the same unusual relation. William Whewell called this consilience of inductions; William Wimsatt described the neighboring principle of robustness. Both point toward the same discipline: a relation becomes stronger when methods with different failure modes recover it.
Four properties carry the comparison:
Independence. The sources come from distinct lineages, archives, interpreters, and transmission chains.
Specificity. The relation is rare enough to distinguish itself from universal images such as water, light, ascent, death, and rebirth.
Constraint. The comparison preserves sequence, exclusions, causal direction, safeguards, and consequences.
Risk. The reconstruction states what should appear in material withheld from its construction and what would count against it.
Shared vocabulary is weak. Shared imagery gains weight when provenance rules out borrowing. Shared operation is stronger: distinct traditions prescribe different practices that reorganize attention, conduct, and identity in the same ordered relation. Shared consequence is stronger still: the practices create the same capacity, hazard, or institutional response despite different doctrines.
Count source families
Five texts copied from one school are five documents but one witness. Two schools with a shared ancestor are partly independent. Different methods, histories, and error patterns offer stronger support. Common embodiment also matters: people everywhere dream, grieve, fear death, detect agency, respond to rhythm, and enter altered states. Similar reports can arise from a shared receiver, a shared generator, or both.
Intellectual Lineage records descent and contribution. Claim and Evidence Discipline keeps a conclusion proportional to the surviving record. A transmitted insight can remain true while all of its copies carry the weight of one lineage.
Preserve disagreement
Flat perennialism keeps agreements and discards the rest. Tomography requires disagreement because it constrains the hidden object. Plato describes reorientation from shadows toward their source, Gnostic systems distinguish counterfeit rulers from the highest God, Kabbalah describes concealment and repair, Kashmir Shaivism describes consciousness limiting itself into finite experience, and Sufism describes remembrance, purification, return, and service.
Their shared operation is precise:
localized identity mistakes a partial order for the whole
↓
disciplined knowing changes the knower's relation to that order
↓
the result is tested through return, repair, or transformed conduct
The traditions disagree about the cause of localization, the nature of ultimate reality, and the fate of personal identity. Those disagreements locate the present limit. Bridge Claims marks the inferential crossings instead of allowing a shared image to do the work of a mechanism.
Reject false convergence
The comparison space is enormous. Parallelomania enlarges resemblance into relation. The Texas sharpshooter circles matches after searching the whole field. Universal symbolism mistakes common bodies and landscapes for rare evidence. Flexible recoding changes the translation whenever a source resists. Modern scientific vocabulary can make an old image sound like a prediction it never made. AI multiplies each failure by generating fluent bridges while hiding the matches that went nowhere.
The correction is structural: predeclare the relation, preserve failed matches, count genealogical clusters, name the transformation, state the rival, and hold material out for testing. Correspondence Map then tracks the surviving relation across scale rather than treating every resemblance as correspondence.
Test the reconstruction
A serious test begins with a bounded training corpus. State the proposed invariant, allowed translations, forbidden findings, and rival models before selecting a holdout. Independent readers code material that did not build the reconstruction.
The model loses when generic motifs perform as well as its specific relations, success requires recoding after the holdout is read, the new material contradicts a required sequence, or a simpler genealogical or cognitive model predicts the result better. Prospective testing turns a reconstruction into a risk-bearing model.
The method’s output
The method can recover one architecture, several local architectures, a changing object, or no common object at the level tested. Its grades are practical:
Recovered means independent instruments constrain the same unusual relation and prospective material confirms it.
Supported means the relation is specific and multi-method while the holdout remains incomplete.
Modeled means the reconstruction organizes known material and exposes clear failure conditions.
Correspondence means the relation is illuminating while independence or mechanism remains unresolved.
Speculative means the match depends on contested provenance, flexible translation, or one source family.
This hierarchy keeps direct knowledge, historical record, scientific measurement, and symbolic correspondence inside one inquiry without making them interchangeable. Cross-Method Convergence states the resulting architecture; Metaphysical Tomography explains how its relations earn that place.
The landing
Traditions are inherited instruments aimed at a reality no single instrument contains. Their overlap earns confidence when the relation is independent, specific, constrained, and risky. Their contradictions expose the angle of projection and the edge of what has been recovered. New material must sharpen a transformation, reveal a dependency, or force the reconstruction to change. That is disciplined consilience: one architecture made visible through irreducibly partial worlds.
