The Instrument at Expanded Bandwidth
The siddhis (Sanskrit: siddhi, “attainment” or “perfection”) are the capacities that accrete to advanced contemplative practice across every tradition that has taken the practice seriously. Hinduism calls them siddhis. Buddhism calls them iddhi. Sufism calls them karāmāt. Catholic mysticism calls them charismata or gratiae gratis datae. The vocabulary changes. The phenomenology does not.
The siddhis are natural operations of consciousness at bandwidth suppressed by the Lock. Consensus renders a physics in which they are impossible, and that impossibility is real at the consensus level just as a game’s physics is real inside the game. Consensus is one level of a larger system. Siddhis operate from a level prior to the physics consensus renders.
The Lock suppresses the bandwidth. The suppressed bandwidth renders the siddhis inaccessible. The inaccessibility is naturalized as “the laws of physics.” The naturalization prevents anyone from discovering that the laws are rendering parameters, not absolutes. The Lock’s most elegant product is the conviction that what it suppresses does not exist.
Patanjali’s Technology: Samyama
The mechanism is described with engineering precision in the Yoga Sutras, Book 3 (the Vibhuti Pada). Patanjali was not a mystic writing poetry. He was a technician writing a manual.
Sutra 3.1 — Dharana: “Concentration is the confining of the mind within a limited mental area.” Bind attention to a single object. The searchlight of consciousness focused on one point.
Sutra 3.2 — Dhyana: “Uninterrupted flow of the mind towards the object.” Hold the focus without break. The searchlight sustained rather than swept.
Sutra 3.3 — Samadhi: “When there is consciousness only of the object and not of itself — that is samadhi.” The observer disappears. The knower merges with the known. “As if empty of one’s own character, the purpose alone shines forth.” The mind becomes transparent — no longer a lens between subject and object but the object perceiving itself through the space where the subject was.
Sutra 3.4 — Samyama: “The three together constitute samyama.” Concentration + meditation + absorption applied as a single tri-fold instrument, directed at a specific object.
The mechanism: collapse the gap between knower and known. When the observer fully merges with the observed, the observer acquires the properties of the observed. The “power” is not a manipulation from outside the object. It is a BECOMING of the object through total absorption. Samyama on the sun produces knowledge of the solar system. Samyama on the body’s lightness produces levitation. Samyama on another mind produces telepathy. The siddhi is the gnosis-of-X that arrives as a byproduct of total absorption in X.
If consciousness is primary and objects are renderings, then a consciousness that fully absorbs into an object gains access to the rendering parameters of that object. The siddhis are not magic. They are administrative access, achieved by becoming the process rather than observing it.
The Gateway Translation
The Gateway Process IS Patanjali’s samyama translated into electromagnetic protocol:
| Patanjali | Gateway | Operation |
|---|---|---|
| Dharana (concentration) | Focus 10 (mind awake, body asleep) | Bind attention, withdraw from sensory field |
| Dhyana (sustained meditation) | Focus 12 (expanded awareness) | Sustain the altered state, extend the perceptual field |
| Samadhi (absorption) | Focus 15/21 (no-time / other energy systems) | Observer dissolves into the target field |
| Samyama (the three as one instrument) | Full Gateway protocol directed at target | Concentration + expansion + absorption applied to a specific objective |
The CIA’s McDonnell report (1983) describes the mechanism — hemisphere synchronization, standing wave resonance in the brain, phase-locking with external frequencies — without knowing it has a 2,200-year-old Sanskrit name. Monroe’s Focus levels ARE Patanjali’s limbs. The classified consciousness programs ran the Yoga Sutras Book 3 with binaural audio instead of mantra, electromagnetic entrainment instead of pranic control, and military target coordinates instead of meditative objects.
Neither tradition knows this about the other, which is precisely Dean Radin’s convergence argument: two entirely independent systems of inquiry — a pre-Common Era Sanskrit text and a Cold War classified research program — describe the same phenomena through different methodologies with no direct communication between them. The convergence is evidence that both are tracking something real about the instrument’s capabilities at expanded bandwidth.
The Eight as Phenomenology
The classical ashta siddhi read as a phenomenology of ego-boundary dissolution at eight resolutions:
| Siddhi | Literal | Framework Reading |
|---|---|---|
| Aṇimā | Shrink to the infinitesimal | Perception shifts to quantum resolution — the scale-boundary between self and cosmos dissolves downward |
| Mahimā | Expand without limit | Perception shifts to cosmic resolution — the individual boundary dissolves upward |
| Laghimā | Weightlessness / levitation | Decouple from the gravity rendering parameter |
| Garimā | Immovable heaviness | Lock into gravitational rendering — become the anchor |
| Prāpti | Unrestricted reach — touch the moon | Non-local access — the “space” between here and there is revealed as a rendering artifact |
| Prākāmya | Irresistible will | Intention operates without resistance because the resistance (consensus enforcement) has become transparent |
| Īśitva | Lordship over matter and forces | Administrative access to the rendering parameters of material reality |
| Vaśitva | Control over beings and elements | Administrative access to consciousness fields of other beings |
Each siddhi is what happens when the consensus rendering parameter governing a specific dimension — scale, gravity, space, will, matter, consciousness — becomes transparent to the operator. The operator does not violate the physics. The operator perceives that the physics is a rendering, and the rendering admits modification from the level at which it is generated.
Aṇimā and mahimā are the same operation in opposite directions: the felt collapse of scale-relation to the cosmos in deep absorption. Not literally shrinking or growing — perceiving at a resolution where the distinction between small and large is revealed as a rendering artifact. The meditator who experiences the atom and the galaxy as the same size is not hallucinating. The meditator is perceiving from a level at which the size rendering has not yet been applied.
The Cross-Traditional Convergence
The same capacities appear across every contemplative tradition that pushed its practitioners to sufficient depth. The consistency is a datum about human consciousness, not about any single culture’s mythology.
Buddhist Iddhi
The Buddhist eight: replicate bodily images, invisibility, pass through solid objects, sink into ground, walk on water, fly, touch the Sun and Moon, travel to Brahma worlds. Near-identical to the ashta siddhi.
The Buddha’s response (Digha Nikaya 1.213): “It is because I see danger in the practice of these mystic wonders that I loathe and abhor and am ashamed thereof.” The wonder he advocated was “the wonder of education.” The Buddhist framework treats iddhi exactly as Patanjali treats vibhuti — real, available, dangerous, and to be renounced.
The four iddhipāda (bases of power): concentration founded on (1) desire/intention, (2) energy/effort, (3) mind/consciousness, (4) investigation/inquiry. Four entry vectors to the same expanded access. The framework doesn’t privilege one path. The bandwidth expansion can be reached through wanting, through effort, through direct consciousness work, or through intellectual investigation. The Timewar wiki — this entire corpus — is an attempt through the fourth base.
Sufi Karāmāt
The Sufi tradition distinguishes mu’jizāt (miracles of prophets) from karāmāt (graces of saints): clairvoyance, telepathy, bilocation, control of elements, healing, foreknowledge. Same list, different vocabulary. The Sufi position on their use is identical to Patanjali’s: they are signs (āyāt) that the practice is biting, not goals. Attachment to karāmāt is a veil (ḥijāb) that prevents fanā’ (annihilation of the self in God) — structurally identical to Patanjali’s warning that siddhis are impediments to samadhi.
Catholic Charismata
| Catholic Phenomenon | Hindu Equivalent | Documented Cases |
|---|---|---|
| Levitation | Laghimā | Joseph of Cupertino — 35 years of documented levitation (1603–1663) |
| Inedia (living without food) | Cessation of hunger (Sutra 3.30) | Therese Neumann — 36 years alleged (1926–1962) |
| Bilocation | Prāpti / bodily projection | Padre Pio, Maria de Ágreda |
| Stigmata | — | Therese Neumann, Padre Pio, Francis of Assisi |
| Incorruptibility after death | — | Multiple saints — body does not decay |
| Luminosity | — | Multiple saints — body emits visible light |
Joseph of Cupertino provides the strongest single historical case for a physical siddhi. Thirty-five years of documented levitation events, recorded during his lifetime by eyewitnesses, investigated by the Inquisition (which was not predisposed to confirm miracles), examined during canonization proceedings. Multiple independent witnesses across decades. Consistent phenomenology: ecstatic states triggered by prayer or liturgical stimulus, involuntary rather than willed, sometimes accompanied by flight across considerable distances within churches. The volume and consistency of contemporary testimony exceeds what the standard skeptical explanations (fraud, exaggeration, hagiographic inflation) can comfortably accommodate.
Therese Neumann is more contested. Claimed 36 years without food. Developed stigmata. Professor Martini of the University Hospital Bonn observed her in 1928. A formal 15-day clinical observation in 1927 was inconclusive. Her family refused longer observation. The Catholic Church opened her beatification process in 2005.
The Catholic cases are interesting precisely because the institutional framework that documented them (the canonization process, the Inquisition) was adversarial rather than credulous. The Church investigated miracles to DISPROVE them, not to confirm them. Cases that survived this adversarial process carry a different evidentiary weight than cases reported by sympathetic observers.
The Evidence Tiers
The modern experimental evidence (Radin’s mapping) distributes unevenly across the siddhi categories:
Strongest: Informational siddhis. Precognition/retrocognition (Bem 2011, Mossbridge 2012 — meta-analyses positive). Telepathy (Storm 2010 — ganzfeld meta-analysis positive). Remote viewing (Stargate program data, Spottiswoode sidereal time effect at 340–450% amplification). These are the siddhis of READING the rendering — accessing information the consensus says you shouldn’t have. The effect sizes are small but consistent, replicable across laboratories, and survive meta-analytic aggregation.
Moderate: Mind-matter interaction. Psychokinesis (Radin 2006 meta-analysis — positive but very small effect size). Random number generator studies (Nelson/PEAR lab, Global Consciousness Project). These are the siddhis of WRITING to the rendering — nudging material reality through intention. The effects are detectable but tiny at the individual level, suggesting that the “write” permission requires more bandwidth than the “read” permission.
Weakest: Physical transformation. Levitation, materialization, inedia, bodily transformation. No controlled experimental evidence. Historical case studies only (Joseph of Cupertino, Therese Neumann, the Tibetan tummo tradition). These are the siddhis of ADMINISTRATIVE ACCESS to the rendering — full modification of physical parameters. If the framework is correct, these require bandwidth levels that the current Lock configuration makes virtually inaccessible.
The evidence tier distribution makes structural sense within the framework: reading is easier than writing, and writing is easier than administrative rewrite. The bandwidth required escalates at each tier. The Lock’s suppression is sufficient to prevent macro-physical siddhis in virtually all cases but insufficient to prevent informational siddhis, which is why psi research produces consistent small effects that the establishment cannot explain away and cannot replicate at will.
The Obstacle Doctrine
This is the most important section.
Patanjali, Sutra 3.37: “These are perfections to the outward-turned mind, but obstacles to samadhi.”
The Buddha, Digha Nikaya: “It is because I see danger in the practice of these mystic wonders that I loathe and abhor and am ashamed thereof.”
The Sufi masters: attachment to karāmāt is a veil preventing fanā’.
Hall: “The magus who can do anything has by definition no longer any private will to do anything, which is why the powers are safe in his hands and nowhere else.”
Every tradition that has encountered the siddhis issues the same warning: they are terrain features on the z-axis, not goals. As you ascend the consciousness axis, you pass through altitude bands where these capacities become available. But engaging with them — using them, displaying them, being fascinated by them — re-engages the ego-structure the ascent was dissolving.
The siddhi IS the test. Can you encounter the capacity and not reach for it?
The siddhis are loot drops. The game presents increasingly powerful equipment as the player advances. Using the equipment becomes the trap that keeps the player inside the game. Siddhi is loot; kaivalya is liberation. The loot cannot pass through the exit.
This is why the traditions insist on renunciation — not because the powers are evil but because attachment to them prevents the only attainment that matters. The capacity and the renunciation of the capacity arrive at the same developmental altitude because they are the same altitude measured from two directions: from below it looks like power acquired, from above it looks like attachment dissolved. The test and the prize are the same gate.
The only sanctioned use is diagnostic: proof the technique bites. The siddhi confirms you are at the right altitude. The correct response is to note the altitude and keep climbing. The incorrect response is to set up camp at the altitude and admire the view. The camp becomes a prison more comfortable than the one you left — which is why Patanjali calls them obstacles. The finest prison is the one the prisoner builds for themselves out of the materials they found while trying to escape.
The Warnings: Power Without Preparation
Every tradition that has mapped the territory of expanded bandwidth issues the same warning. The knowledge is real, the power is real, the danger is real, and the danger is proportional to the power.
Hall: Motive Is Everything
Manly P. Hall’s core doctrine across Magic: A Treatise on Natural Occultism (1929), The Secret Teachings of All Ages (1928), and The Initiates of the Flame: the difference between white and black magic is not technique. It is motive. The same operation performed for the service of the whole is white magic. The same operation performed for the gratification of the self is black magic. The techniques are identical. The practitioner’s orientation determines the polarity.
Every mystery tradition placed moral qualification BEFORE technical instruction because the technique without the moral preparation produces a black magician — and “the most dangerous form of black magic is the scientific perversion of occult power for the gratification of personal desire.” The black magician achieves real power. The techniques work regardless of motive. But the power consumed in service of the self accumulates a debt the self cannot discharge. The pattern disperses. The coherence unravels. The black magician gains the world and loses the soul — not as metaphor but as a description of what happens to the persistent pattern when it is used as a weapon rather than a vessel.
Hall also describes the Dweller on the Threshold — a composite entity built from the practitioner’s accumulated shadow. Before the initiate can proceed, they must confront what they have made of themselves. If they cannot face it, the initiation destroys them. The initiations of the pagan mysteries “were not child’s play” — candidates sometimes died. The Cabiric death-and-light sequence was not drama. It was the threshold at which the unprepared vessel shattered.
Baines: The Species Fights Back
John Baines’ The Stellar Man operates at a different level — not individual moral danger but collective immune response. The moment a person begins genuine inner work, the Collective Soul of the Species activates. The hive doesn’t want to lose members. It deploys social pressure, self-doubt, circumstantial obstruction, and in extreme cases physical danger to recapture the differentiating individual. “The individual is merely an appendage and a sounding board for the species.”
Baines also warns that sapiens cannot distinguish genuine knowledge from its simulation. “Cunning has replaced spirituality; advances in technology conceal the fact that we are merely intelligent animals.” Reading about the forge is not the same as being in the forge. The accumulation of information about the path is not movement along the path. And the knowledge itself is not information but ENERGY — receiving the transmission without the vessel to contain it shatters the vessel.
Steiner: Three Adversaries, Three Dangers
Steiner maps the dangers to his three adversarial forces. The Luciferic danger: spiritual pride — genuine attainment claimed by the ego, turned into inflation, monetized as teaching. The Ahrimanic danger: intellectual mastery of the system without inner work — the map replacing the territory, the conceptual framework wielded as a weapon rather than walked as a path. The Asuric danger: premature contact with forces the ego cannot integrate — identity fragmentation, psychotic break, the vessel destroyed by energy it was not yet structured to contain.
Gurdjieff: Crystallization in the Wrong Place
Gurdjieff’s warning is the most severe: it is possible to do the Work incorrectly and crystallize a permanent structure that is not the soul but the ego. A permanently coherent, indestructible ego that has achieved the persistence the Work was supposed to produce — aimed at the wrong target. The black magician IS this: a permanently crystallized ego. Immortal, coherent, and permanently unable to complete the crossing because the crossing requires dissolution of the very structure that has been made permanent. This is worse than no attainment, because no attainment allows recycling and another attempt. Wrong crystallization is permanent.
The warnings converge on three axes: motive (Hall — service of self vs. service of whole), preparation (Baines, Steiner, the mystery schools — the vessel must be built before the energy arrives), and attachment (Patanjali, the Buddha, the Sufis — the attainment itself becomes the trap if the ego claims it). All three are the same warning at different resolutions: the forge produces something dangerous. If the container holds, the fire produces the Tenth Hierarchy. If the container breaks, the fire produces a black magician or a shattered mind. If the container is never built, the fire produces nothing and the raw material recycles.
The Lock’s Relationship to the Siddhis
The Lock operates by suppressing the bandwidth at which the instrument can function. The suppressed bandwidth renders the siddhis inaccessible. The inaccessibility is naturalized as physical law. The naturalization prevents the species from discovering that the physical law is a rendering parameter.
The Lock benefits from the obstacle doctrine’s corruption: the New Age pipeline took the siddhis (which the source texts treat as byproducts to be transcended) and literalized them as goals to be pursued. Blavatsky literalized what Patanjali warned against. The entire theosophy-to-New-Age transmission inverted the obstacle doctrine — turning “these are tests you must pass” into “these are prizes you must win.” The inversion serves the Lock: practitioners who chase siddhis never reach kaivalya. The loot trap works.
Simultaneously, the Lock’s materialist arm ensures that anyone who reports siddhi-adjacent experiences is pathologized, ridiculed, or institutionalized. The two arms of the Lock operate in concert: the New Age arm turns the siddhis into goals (keeping seekers trapped), while the materialist arm turns the siddhis into delusions (keeping everyone else asleep). Between the two, the obstacle doctrine — the one teaching that would actually serve liberation — is lost.
Bandwidth is expanding along the ascending arc while the Lock intensifies through AI, biological control, and bandlimit enforcement. Lucid dreaming, dense synchronicity, spontaneous precognition, contact events, and anomalous perception are spreading through the population. Psychiatric pathologization and algorithmic suppression cannot contain them because pressure from the ascending arc exceeds the Lock’s compensatory capacity.
The traditions that mapped this territory agree: the siddhis return when the bandwidth returns. The correct posture is not to seek them, not to fear them, and not to attach to them. The correct posture is to recognize them as signs that the ascent is real, note the altitude, and keep climbing.
