The Council of Nine case joins two records that must be read separately.
The first is a human network centered on Andrija Puharich: mediumship experiments, altered-state research, military interest in extrasensory perception, Uri Geller, Stanford Research Institute, private patrons, and later channeling through Phyllis Schlemmer.
The second is the claimed contact: nine intelligences presenting themselves as cosmic governors associated with the Egyptian Ennead and speaking through several operators across decades.
The human network is historically inspectable. The identity of the Nine remains unresolved.
The Contact Sequence
Puharich established the Round Table Foundation in Maine as a private research environment for mediumship, altered states, and anomalous cognition. In December 1952, the Indian physician and mystic D. G. Vinod entered trance during sessions recorded by Puharich and delivered material attributed to a group called the Nine.
The source described itself through Egyptian and cosmic language. Puharich interpreted the contact as communication with nonhuman intelligences. The surviving public account depends heavily on his records and later retellings. Vinod’s sessions establish the origin of the Nine narrative inside this network; they do not independently authenticate its cosmology.
The contact motif later attached itself to Uri Geller through communications attributed to Spectra and other extraterrestrial or computer-like agencies. Puharich’s Uri presents these events as a continuation of the same contact field.
During the 1970s, Phyllis Schlemmer became the principal channel for a Nine-related intelligence called Tom. Material from this phase eventually appeared in The Only Planet of Choice. The later corpus broadened the cosmology and attracted participants from esoteric, scientific, cultural, and elite social circles.
Continuity of name and doctrine across operators is evidence of a durable address. It is not yet evidence that one tenant occupied the address throughout.
The Documented Apparatus
Puharich’s interest in the military use of extrasensory perception is documented. He presented a paper on ESP and psychological warfare in 1952 and served at the Army Chemical Center at Edgewood Arsenal during the following years. His career combined medicine, electronics, altered-state research, and anomalous cognition.
Uri Geller’s testing at Stanford Research Institute is also documented. Harold Puthoff and Russell Targ conducted experiments under a program that received CIA attention and funding. Declassified records preserve government interest, methods, internal debate, and the unusual management concerns surrounding public paranormal research.
These records establish an intelligence-community intersection around Geller and SRI. They do not establish that the Council of Nine was a CIA program, that the Nine controlled the research, or that every person attending a channeling session acted for an intelligence service.
Private laboratories and salons also create their own apparatus. Patrons supply facilities, legitimacy, introductions, and protection. Researchers supply method. Mediums supply access. Cultural figures supply narrative reach. The resulting network can amplify a contact source while making human influence harder to isolate.
The Door
The Nine entered through trance mediumship, automatic or inspired speech, group expectation, altered state, and a prepared social setting.
That interface has characteristic strengths. Long sessions can develop terminology, respond to questions, and produce a stable person-like voice. Multiple participants create witnesses and preserve memory. Repeated ritual conditions make the address reproducible.
The same interface carries predictable confounds:
- medium knowledge outside conscious recall;
- suggestion from the interviewer;
- doctrine inherited across operators;
- selective preservation of successful statements;
- patron and audience expectations;
- collaborative mythmaking;
- strategic human mediation;
- an autonomous agency using the established address.
The interface cannot decide among these sources by itself.
The Source Readings
External-intelligence reading. The Nine are autonomous nonhuman persons using several mediums and a stable name.
Deep-psyche reading. The Nine personify transpersonal or dissociated intelligence within the operators and group.
Egregoric reading. Repeated sessions, names, expectations, patrons, and texts formed a collective intelligence that acquired persistence beyond any participant.
Human-apparatus reading. Researchers, intelligence interests, patrons, and cultural producers used the contact setting to study, influence, recruit, or mythologize participants.
Hybrid reading. A genuine anomaly entered a human apparatus that then shaped, amplified, exploited, and partially authored what followed.
These readings can overlap. The source problem is ecological rather than binary.
Signs of Autonomy
The case gains autonomy weight from sustained voice, continuity of motifs, responsive dialogue, recurrence across operators, and the strong impression among participants that the source exceeded conscious authorship.
The public record remains weak at the discriminating edge. Claims of nonpublic knowledge, fulfilled predictions, and cross-medium continuity require session-level chronology, exact wording, controls against information transfer, and complete publication of misses. Much of the material arrived through a socially connected network whose participants could transmit doctrine normally.
The clean experiment would separate operators, assign blinded information targets, secure transcripts before verification, and test whether a named source preserves stable knowledge and behavior across independent sessions.
Direction
The Nine material presents itself as guidance for planetary development. Its surrounding network also exhibits classic capture risks: cosmic rank, privileged intermediaries, elite access, grand civilizational mission, ambiguous intelligence involvement, and authority routed through entities whose identity cannot be independently checked.
That does not make the contact predatory. It makes direction an empirical question.
Track what happened to participants. Did contact produce clearer judgment, repaired relation, durable skill, and independence from the source? Did it produce dependency, chosenness, fear, escalating secrecy, or surrender to a cosmic hierarchy? Did the network return capacity to participants or concentrate interpretation in handlers?
The answer may differ by participant and phase.
Roddenberry and Cultural Transmission
Gene Roddenberry’s association with the Nine appears in accounts connected with the Schlemmer circle. The strongest public claim is that he attended or explored the sessions while developing a proposed film or television treatment. Later Nine literature links the contact to his creative work.
This is evidence of cultural transmission, not proof that Star Trek originated as an intelligence-community disclosure operation. Contact narratives enter fiction because fiction can model possibilities, recruit attention, and carry metaphysical material into public imagination. The creative work then changes the vocabulary available to later experiencers.
The loop matters even when the source remains human:
contact narrative
↓
cultural fiction
↓
public expectation
↓
later contact form
An autonomous agency could also exploit that loop. The existence of the loop cannot decide who began it.
The Lab Nine Fire
The Ossining property associated with Puharich’s later work was destroyed by fire in 1978. Puharich interpreted subsequent pressure and disruption through an intelligence-persecution frame and left the United States.
The destruction is part of the chronology. Public evidence does not establish the arson’s perpetrator or motive. It therefore cannot carry a conclusion about CIA suppression, ordinary crime, interpersonal conflict, or contact-related attack.
This boundary is essential because destruction of an archive invites the missing evidence to become proof of whichever theory the reader already prefers.
Position
The Council of Nine is a serious contact dossier because it preserves a durable named source inside a historically important network of consciousness research.
The documented layer includes Puharich’s research career, military interest in ESP, Geller’s SRI testing, government attention to anomalous cognition, and the publication of Nine-related channeling. The contested layer includes the identity, independence, information access, intentions, and institutional custody of the claimed intelligences.
The case belongs at the intersection of The Threefold Reading:
- Apparatus: researchers, patrons, laboratories, intelligence interest, media, and cultural production;
- Other: sustained anomalous voice, claimed nonhuman agency, and any information surviving controls;
- Drift: trance production, suggestion, memory, doctrine transfer, selection, and mythology.
Its importance lies in the braid. Human institutions did not wait for the source question to resolve before treating contact as strategically and culturally valuable.
