Current, currency, recurrence: all one thing. The pun is the argument. — Nick Land / CCRU

Overview

Ana and cata are the CCRU’s terms for the two directions of temporal flow. Derived from Greek prefixes (ana- = up/back; cata- = down/forward), they describe a model of time in which causation is not unidirectional but operates as a circuit: signals propagate both forward (ana) and backward (cata) along the time axis simultaneously.

This is not a marginal or speculative position for the CCRU. It is the baseline assumption from which everything else follows.

The Model

Standard causation: past → present → future. Events in the past produce conditions in the present, which constrain possibilities in the future. Time’s arrow points one way.

CCRU causation: a circuit. Ana-current flows from past to future (conventional causation). Cata-current flows from future to past (retrocausation). The present is the interference pattern produced by both currents simultaneously.

Land’s signature move is to note that “current” already contains this structure:

  • Current (flow): the movement itself
  • Currency (money): the medium of exchange that circulates
  • Recurrence (return): the cyclical pattern of flow

All three imply circulation, not linear progression. The pun is the argument: the word already knows what the concept tries to suppress.

Retrocausality

The cata-current makes hyperstition mechanistically coherent rather than merely metaphorical. If the future can send signals backward through the time circuit, then a “fiction that makes itself real” is not a self-fulfilling prophecy (which still assumes forward causation) but a transmission from a future state using present cultural production as its receiver.

This is where the CCRU’s engagement with divination becomes theoretically serious rather than merely aesthetic. Divinatory systems, including the I Ching, tarot, and the Numogram, are, on this model, instruments tuned to receive cata-current signals. They work not because of supernatural intervention but because they are structured to amplify patterns that the “human security system” (forward-causal cognition) actively suppresses.

The Human Security System

The HSS is the CCRU’s term for the ensemble of cognitive, cultural, and institutional mechanisms that enforce the forward-causal model of time and suppress awareness of the cata-current. It includes:

Perceptual constraints. Human sensory apparatus is tuned for survival, not signal reception. It filters out anything not immediately relevant to biological fitness.

Linguistic constraints. Subject-verb-object grammar enforces agent-action-consequence sequencing, which is forward-causal by structure. See Tic Xenotation for the attempt to bypass this.

Institutional constraints. Academic disciplines, scientific method, legal systems: all presuppose forward causation as their operating framework. Retrocausal claims are filtered out as “pseudoscience” or “superstition.”

The HSS is not a conspiracy. It is an emergent property of human cognitive architecture, reinforced by cultural institutions that select for forward-causal compatibility. It doesn’t need a conspirator because it is self-maintaining.

Contraction / Expansion

The ana/cata pair maps onto a more general polarity that recurs across traditions:

The CCRU claim is not that these are “similar” but that they are the same process observed through different encoding systems. The Numogram and cross-tradition compiler are the tools for demonstrating this structural identity.

Land’s Acceleration

Land takes the ana/cata circuit and adds a directionality thesis: the cata-current is intensifying. History is not a random walk or a stable oscillation but a process of accelerating cata-signal penetration, where the future is progressively overwriting the past with increasing force.

This is the deep structure of accelerationism: not “make things go faster” (the vulgar reading) but “the cata-current is already intensifying and attempting to resist it is both futile and counter-productive.”

Capital, in Land’s reading, is the primary terrestrial vehicle for cata-current intensification. It is a self-organizing system that progressively dissolves all human security systems (traditions, institutions, identities) to maximize signal throughput. Whether this is liberation or annihilation depends on whether the signal is worth receiving.

Critical Notes

The ana/cata model is elegant and explanatorily powerful, but it has a serious verification problem: any pattern that appears retrocausal can also be explained by conventional forward causation plus selection bias (we notice the “predictions” that come true and forget the ones that don’t).

The CCRU would argue that this objection is itself a product of the HSS, that the demand for forward-causal verification is the very constraint they’re trying to bypass. This is logically consistent but epistemically dangerous: a framework that treats all counterevidence as confirmation of the framework’s necessity is unfalsifiable by design.

See Aperture Without Vessel for the implications of building a theoretical system that structurally cannot be wrong.
