A second source of human life

¶3:1 There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: 3:2 The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. 3:3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. 3:4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?
¶3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 3:7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. 3:8 The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
¶3:9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be? 3:10 Jesus answered and said unto him, Art thou a master of Israel, and knowest not these things? 3:11 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, We speak that we do know, and testify that we have seen; and ye receive not our witness. 3:12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things? 3:13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

Learning reaches the threshold of rebirth
born again
Rebirth brings the spiritual human into active life within the embodied person. It changes the source from which perception and identity proceed.
Back to these wordsLearning reaches the threshold of rebirth
Nicodemus knows the teaching office and can recognize divine signs. Yet Jesus names a capacity he does not possess: seeing the kingdom through spiritual birth. The kingdom is the divine order made accessible to living participation. Information about God cannot create that participation by itself.
Nicodemus carries learned religious identity: a person trained to explain sacred matters through an established office. His arrival at night makes the encounter private and places recognition within darkness. Jesus addresses the spiritual individuality that this office cannot create. Rebirth changes the source from which the person perceives and acts.
Seeing the kingdom means direct participation in the divine life governing existence. The observer no longer knows that life only through reports or inherited categories. A new center of awareness becomes active within the existing body. Its birth must transform allegiance, because the old personality will otherwise appropriate the new perception.
Nicodemus hears rebirth as another physical pregnancy. His literal question exposes the limit of the framework he brings. The new birth requires another source of identity within the existing person. The soul must receive spiritual life rather than repeat the bodily process that first formed it.
Water prepares the vessel; Spirit gives it life
of water and of the Spirit
Water establishes purification and a receptive vessel. Spirit supplies the divine life through which that vessel can participate in God.
Back to these wordsWater prepares the vessel; Spirit gives it life
Water purifies and receives a new form; Spirit communicates divine life to that prepared vessel. Baptism gives this passage a bodily rite. Flesh produces embodied continuity, while Spirit produces the life through which the person can enter the divine order.
Water is the receptive and cleansing element of initiation. It releases the fixed form of an old allegiance so the soul can receive another life. Spirit is the divine agency that animates the prepared soul. The distinction keeps purification from becoming a claim that technique can manufacture spiritual birth.
The wind gives that agency perceptible effects without making its source available for possession. A changed person can recognize guidance while remaining unable to dictate its arrival. The practical evidence is a capacity sustained after the opening. Awareness can now interrupt a familiar compulsion and answer from the received spiritual relation.
The wind expresses spiritual activity that can be heard through its effects without being commanded at its source. Rebirth therefore exceeds the personality’s control. The practical preparation includes cleansing conduct, truthful attention, and receptive prayer. These form a vessel for a life received rather than fabricated.
The knower must learn from living contact
came down from heaven
The Son brings divine life into human embodiment. Ascent becomes possible through the relation established by that descent.
Back to these wordsThe knower must learn from living contact
Jesus contrasts received testimony with the refusal to hear it. Nicodemus’ mastery of teaching has not become perception of the spiritual event. The conversation asks knowledge to answer encounter. Spiritual speech must arise from the life it describes.
The Son of man is divine humanity entering embodied existence through Christ. Descent communicates a life that earthly personality could not generate from itself. Ascent is the soul’s conscious participation in that communicated life. These movements form one relation, with divine initiative answered through human transformation.
The teacher’s difficulty concerns the difference between naming an event and having the capacity to receive it. Familiar concepts can conceal this difference by making recognition feel complete. Spiritual testimony asks the hearer to become receptive beyond that apparent mastery. Learning must change the knower before the words become knowledge of the event.
The Son of man descends from heaven and can therefore disclose the ascent. Christ joins the spiritual origin to human embodiment. The path upward depends on that prior communication downward. The person cannot reach heaven by magnifying an identity formed entirely within earthly conditions.
A second source of human life
The conversation distinguishes spiritual birth from bodily repetition and learned expertise. Water prepares a vessel; Spirit gives the vessel another source of life.
The practical preparation changes conduct and attention, while the birth itself remains received. The personality cannot award itself the condition it is learning to bear.

The Son joins descent to ascent

¶3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 3:15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
¶3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 3:21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

The lifted serpent discloses transformed encounter
the Son of man be lifted up
The elevation points toward the cross and its transforming encounter with death. Divine life reaches humanity through what seemed to seal its destruction.
Back to these wordsThe lifted serpent discloses transformed encounter
The raised serpent recalls Moses’ healing sign in the wilderness. The threatening form becomes the place through which healing is received. Christ’s lifting joins that operation to the cross: the encounter with death becomes the passage through which divine life enters humanity.
The raised serpent places the image of the wound where it can be faced directly. Its healing function reverses the use of serpent intelligence to produce concealment and division. The cross likewise makes the encounter with death visible within divine life. What seemed final becomes a threshold held by another source.
Eternal life is participation in that source beyond the interval of a mortal body. It begins through communion with Christ, rather than by merely extending the personality’s present arrangements. Divine love reaches the embodied world because that world is the place of transformation. Rebirth therefore returns spiritual knowledge into the life being lived.
The Son is given because God loves the world. Salvation means receiving that divine life deeply enough to transform the human’s relation to death. Belief here includes trust, allegiance, and participation. Its work reaches beyond holding a correct sentence about the event.
The light reveals the life one actually serves
doeth truth
Truth becomes an enacted relation with divine light. The person brings conduct into visibility so that spiritual recognition can transform it.
Back to these wordsThe light reveals the life one actually serves
Judgment appears through the person’s relation to light. Concealment protects acts that cannot bear disclosure. Coming toward light makes those acts visible and opens them to transformation. The divine presence encounters the life already being lived.
The light is divine disclosure acting upon a life with actual choices and consequences. Judgment occurs as those choices meet a presence they cannot control by explanation. Darkness is the concealment that keeps a divided allegiance undisturbed. The soul chooses whether to preserve that enclosure or become available for transformation.
Doing truth gives the new birth a visible body. A person acknowledges an action, repairs its consequence where possible, and relinquishes the identity that required concealment. The spiritual relation becomes capable of governing ordinary decisions. Without that return, a claim of rebirth can protect the very life it promised to change.
The practical test is whether spiritual recognition increases truthfulness. A person can repeat the promise while using darkness to preserve deception. Doing truth joins inward allegiance to outward conduct. Rebirth becomes actual as the new life enters what the person permits to be seen.
The Son joins descent to ascent
Christ’s descent establishes the relation through which humanity can rise. His lifting makes death itself the threshold of divine life.
The closing test brings that relation into conduct. A person participates in the light by allowing it to reveal the life actually being lived.
