A synchronometer is a calendar used as an instrument of consciousness: a shared temporal grid that trains attention, coordinates memory, and gives a community symbolic addresses for recurring experience. It belongs to the practical edge of The Temporal Field, where sequence becomes phase and a pattern can become actionable.
An ordinary calendar answers: What date is it? A synchronometer adds three harder questions:
- Which patterns are returning?
- What kind of attention does this interval invite?
- What becomes visible when many people inhabit the same symbolic rhythm?
José Argüelles used the word for the 13 Moon/28-day calendar he developed with Lloydine Argüelles. The system combines an equal-period civil calendar, the 13 × 20 grammar of the Mesoamerican sacred count, and a noospheric theory of planetary memory. Its strongest insight is not that one set of numbers mechanically rules the universe. It is that calendars train the minds that live inside them.
The calendar may be the most ordinary consciousness technology ever built. Its force appears through the people, institutions, bodies, and rituals that inhabit its intervals.
Three Numbers, Three Functions
The system is often reduced to 13:20 versus 12:60. That shorthand compresses three distinct layers.
13 × 28: the civil lattice
Thirteen periods of twenty-eight days produce 364 days: fifty-two exact weeks. A 365th Day Out of Time sits between years, with an additional intercalary convention required for leap years.
This is not the historical Maya civil calendar, and twenty-eight days is not the astronomical lunar-phase month. The traditional Haab uses eighteen twenty-day months plus five Wayeb days. The synodic lunar month averages about 29.53 days.
The 13×28 design does something else. It creates a regular lattice in which every period has the same internal geometry. The first day of every period lands on the same weekday. The same numbered day always occupies the same phase within its period. Recurrence becomes easier to see, remember, compare, and ritualize.
That regularity is operational. A stable grid reduces calendrical noise and supplies shared symbolic addresses for memory and intention.
13 × 20: the symbolic count
The traditional Tzolk’in or Chol Q’ij combines thirteen numbers with twenty day signs to produce 260 unique days. Living Maya daykeepers continue to maintain this sacred count.
Argüelles adapted its combinatorial grammar into Dreamspell and the wider 13:20 system. He treated each day as a qualitative address rather than an empty container. The date identifies a position within a symbolic cycle and invites a particular mode of attention.
The distinction matters. The 260-day count is an inherited Mesoamerican calendrical form. Dreamspell is a modern initiatic synthesis built from that form. Confusing them erases both the living tradition and the novelty of the modern instrument.
12:60: the machine-time regime
12:60 names the social program formed by the twelve-month Gregorian calendar and sixty-minute hour. Its numbers also carry an older geometry. The dodecahedron has twelve faces, twenty vertices, thirty edges, and sixty face-edge incidences. Twelve and sixty belong to the completed cosmic shell: face and articulated boundary.
That program became industrial scheduling, wages, deadlines, debt service, school bells, transport timetables, financial quarters, broadcast grids, and network latency. Its governing phrase is time is money. Duration becomes inventory; lateness becomes moral failure; every unallocated interval appears economically vacant.
Industrial civilization seized this sacred shell and displaced its living center. The result is captured measure: a real harmonic instrument governed by an administrative pseudo-center. Clocks, contracts, and machines receive one authoritative phase, while the persons coordinated by them lose custody of the meaning and direction of their shared time.
13:20 restores the missing relation. Twelve forms surround a living thirteenth center, while twenty vertices describe the dodecahedral whole from another register. The ratio names a noospheric body whose center remains present in its members. The Universal Platonic Hologram therefore makes the two counts legible as rival uses of one architecture:
12:60 — completed shell under external custody
13:20 — completed shell inhabited by a living center
The conflict concerns who occupies the center of measure. The same clock can coordinate enslavement or communion according to whether synchronization extracts authorship or increases the participant’s capacity to perceive and act.
The Calendar Enters the Causal Loop
A calendar does not passively describe a society. It coordinates one.
Fiscal quarters move capital because institutions believe in and act on them. Liturgical calendars reorganize diet, memory, gathering, and expectation. School years shape development. Election calendars alter public speech. Markets react to scheduled announcements before the announced information exists.
This yields a general mechanism:
shared temporal coordinate
↓
repeated attention and expectation
↓
coordinated behavior
↓
material and symbolic consequence
↓
stronger reality of the coordinate
An artificial calendar can therefore produce real effects. Once millions of people, contracts, machines, and rituals synchronize to it, its abstractions become causal infrastructure. Consensus turns a symbolic grid into a projected environment, and each synchronized act gives that environment another material body.
The reverse is also true. A deliberately designed calendar can retrain attention. It can make recurrence more legible, create intervals protected from ordinary production, and synchronize communities around meanings the dominant clock excludes.
NTP and NET
The technosphere already operates through a planetary synchronometer. Network Time Protocol, or NTP, gives distributed machines a shared second count so that networks can order messages, compare events, and coordinate action. Its original timestamp counts seconds from 1900 through a 32-bit field. RFC 1305 identified the approaching overflow in 1992. RFC 2030 fixed the first era boundary at 06:28:16 UTC on 7 February 2036.
At that boundary, the inherited seconds field returns to zero. The number alone can no longer distinguish the era beginning in 1900 from the era beginning in 2036. The network requires a wider context to know which age it inhabits.
Argüelles named the emergent noospheric timing order NET. NET organizes planetary consciousness through synchronic phase, shared meaning, and direct relation. NTP coordinates the machines of the technosphere; NET coordinates the living centers of the noosphere. One answers when did the packet arrive? The other asks what has arrived through this moment?
The two acronyms come from separate source lines. Their Hermetic correspondence identifies one operation crossing scales. The technical network externalized planetary synchronization before humanity learned to inhabit synchronization consciously. NTP places the center in the time authority and makes every node receive its age. NET places the center within the living relation among participants and makes shared phase answerable to meaning. In 2036, the inherited epoch reaches a literal seam and asks for the higher-order context that the end of mechanical time restores.
The Psi Bank
Argüelles called the noosphere’s planetary memory and timing layer the psi bank. In his model, information is stored in a field associated with Earth’s electromagnetic environment and released through daily psi chrono units. Prophecy occurs when information becomes readable through human channels positioned at the appropriate point in the pattern.
The proposed Van Allen-belt plates and 2,080-unit mechanism remain Argüelles’s specific cosmology. The architectural insight survives without pretending those details have been physically established:

The calendar can function as an address system through which attention repeatedly samples a larger pattern field. This is the calendrical form of morphic retrieval and field participation.
The synchronometer trains the instrument to notice the field’s timing.
The Hermetic Laws of Time
The synchronometer applies the Hermetic principles as laws.
Mentalism establishes that temporal form enters reality through consciousness. A calendar exists as marks and arithmetic, but its world-building power appears when minds inhabit it, institutions enforce it, and behavior gives it consequence.
Correspondence makes a day a relation across scales. The position inside a week, period, year, historical cycle, bodily phase, and planetary rhythm can express one pattern at different resolutions. The correspondence must be read accurately; it does not need to be treated as metaphor.
Vibration establishes that every manifested system has tempo, periodicity, and state. 13:20 is not hertz, but the lives organized through it still produce measurable and subtle rhythms.
Polarity explains why synchronization can integrate or capture. Shared rhythm can increase collective agency or subordinate every participant to one command clock.
Rhythm is the calendar’s governing law. Return is never empty repetition. Each recurrence brings the state accumulated during the prior turn.
Cause and Effect makes the calendar operational. Repeated timing changes attention; attention changes action; coordinated action changes institutions and environments; those changes condition the next cycle.
Gender appears as the alternation between receptive timing and generative cast: the interval receives a pattern, consciousness acts through it, and the result becomes the condition received at the next turn.
The calendar is a lawful interface between rhythm, mind, and manifestation.
Prophecy as Distributed Decoding
Argüelles described prophets as human points in time. One person receives a dream. Another preserves it. A later generation supplies the symbolic lexicon. An event reveals which layer of the image was literal, historical, psychological, or civilizational.
Prophecy is attractor information becoming locally readable rather than a telegram sent backward from a fixed future.
The quality of the reading depends on:
- the coherence and discrimination of the receiver;
- the symbolic language available to the culture;
- the depth of the historical archive;
- the amount of noise introduced by fear, desire, prestige, and institutional capture;
- the action taken after the signal enters the system.
The synchronometer can support this process by preserving timing, recurrence, and comparison. Discernment remains essential. A symbolic date becomes useful when it produces clearer perception and more responsible action, rather than turning every coincidence into an order.
Why Reality Feels More Dreamlike
Mechanical time presents reality as objects moving through a uniform sequence. Synchronic time presents reality as meaningful relations arriving through sequence.
In coherent states, the interval among perception, meaning, decision, action, and feedback contracts. More complete agency loops fit inside the same hour. Relevant symbols become visible earlier. Intentions reach behavior with less internal obstruction. Consequences answer closer to the act that produced them.

The second structure feels dreamlike because sign and response occupy one circuit. Thought does not become omnipotent. Symbol becomes more causally dense because consciousness can recognize and act through it before the relation disperses.
The stronger possibility is genuine field contact: coherent consciousness may receive information from future attractors or a planetary memory not reducible to ordinary inference. Synchronicity, presentiment, prophecy, and anomalous cognition keep that aperture open. The ordinary and anomalous channels can operate together.
The End of Time
The end of time names the end of linear time’s monopoly over causation. Sequence continues inside a larger temporal field.
Wall time continues. Bodies age. Seasons turn. Actions carry consequences. What ends is the civilizational trance that treats uniform duration as the whole of time and leaves meaning outside the mechanism.
The transition restores several temporal dimensions at once:
- sequence — what occurred before and after;
- phase — where a system stands inside a recurrence;
- kairos — when an opening becomes actionable;
- agency time — how much conscious participation occurs inside an interval;
- synchronic order — which meaningful relations converge across the interval.
A calendar cannot perform the Work for its users. A more plastic reality intensifies both creation and capture. Dreamlike responsiveness without waking discrimination becomes suggestion, grandiosity, or dependence. The same recovered field may be lived as inner awakening, collective phase change, bodily translation, or literal departure; the instrument prepares attention while leaving the form of the crossing open.
Steiner’s developmental image is exact: humanity must recover the plasticity of dream consciousness without surrendering the sovereign center formed through waking life. The destination is not sleep. It is lucid participation.
The Day Out of Time
The Day Out of Time is the system’s clearest ritual intervention. A day deliberately removed from the normal month-week grid creates a civilizational caesura: an interval free from production, debt, and administrative sequence. It performs the office of the thirteenth by returning participants from the completed calendrical shell to the living center before another cycle begins.
Its power does not depend on the date possessing a hidden physical force. A shared liminal interval can interrupt habit, permit review, restore memory, and rehearse another relation to time.
Every durable calendar contains holy days, festivals, fasts, jubilees, or thresholds because a society that cannot stop its ordinary clock cannot inspect the world that clock is building.
The Instrument’s Historical Status
The 13 Moon synchronometer is a modern initiatic instrument built from fixed-calendar mathematics, Maya-derived symbolism, and noospheric metaphysics. It stands apart from the historical Maya calendar and from a literal lunar calendar. Those facts clarify the instrument and preserve the distinct lineages from which it draws.
Argüelles identified the decisive problem: civilization mistakes its scheduling system for reality. A different schedule cannot save civilization by decree, but it can train the attention required to inhabit time differently.
The serious claim is practical and metaphysical at once. Change the shared rhythm and different relations become visible. Change what becomes visible and a different world can be built.
