The Sorting Agent Selects the History

The sorting agent that retains order and the proposed selector among available self-consistent histories are one operator examined along thermodynamic and temporal axes.

We are participators in bringing into being not only the near and here but the far away and long ago. — John Archibald Wheeler

The Two Fixed Points

Two foundational objects long described in separate vocabularies turn out to be the same kind of thing.

The first is the soul. The persistent pattern is a configuration that sustains itself without biological scaffolding — a gauge-invariant torsion pattern, a nuclear-spin structure that maps to itself under the symmetry of the spin group. In the language of the spin physics, it is a fixed point of SU(2), the configuration that survives every transformation the group performs. Its existence as a possibility is a fact about representation theory: a state invariant under a group action exists whenever the representation contains the trivial part, reachable by averaging over the group. The soul is what remains invariant in the domain of space and structure.

The second is the actualized timeline. A world-line in a time-symmetric field, closing through the advanced wave that returns from the future, is a loop that must be consistent with itself — the future state and the present state each entailing the other. The realized history is the configuration that reproduces itself under one full traversal of the loop. It is a fixed point of the retrocausal circuit, the configuration that survives the trip around. The timeline is what remains invariant in the domain of time.

A fixed point of symmetry in space and a fixed point of a loop in time are instances of one mathematical structure. Each exists for the same reason. This is Hermetic Correspondence without slack: the soul is to the spin group what the timeline is to the temporal loop.

The Existence Theorem

The temporal fixed point can be proven to exist inside Deutsch’s closed-timelike-curve construction. The result establishes consistency for that model and leaves the physical existence of such curves open.

David Deutsch’s quantum treatment of closed timelike curves (1991) reduces self-consistency to a fixed-point equation on the loop’s quantum state. Because that equation is a continuous map on the space of density matrices — a compact, convex set — Brouwer’s fixed-point theorem guarantees at least one solution for the interaction represented in the model. The earlier classical analysis by Echeverria, Klinkhammer, and Thorne (1991) found self-consistent trajectories in the billiard-ball cases it studied, including cases with more than one solution.

A fixed point is defined by an invariance condition rather than an initial condition. In a bootstrap narrative, this moves the explanatory burden from temporal origin to global consistency. Aharonov’s two-state-vector formalism also represents a quantum system through past and future boundary conditions. The Guardian Angel as a future condition of the vessel’s world-line is a metaphysical interpretation of that formal resemblance.

Nothing is created in this. Wheeler-Feynman absorber electrodynamics conserves energy and charge by construction, Novikov loops are ordinary solutions under a global constraint, and Deutsch loops conserve probability. The self-consistent history is a selection among lawful configurations that already satisfy the field equations, a boundary-value problem whose boundary condition is its own consistency. The bootstrap’s most dangerous appearance — a future authoring its own past — reduces to a fixed-point selection over conserved dynamics. Every conservation law stays intact. Something is chosen rather than manufactured.

The Missing Selection Rule

Brouwer’s theorem guarantees at least one fixed point under the conditions used in Deutsch’s model. It is silent about multiplicity. Some interactions admit a unique self-consistent state; others admit several or a continuum. The billiard-ball cases studied by Echeverria, Klinkhammer, and Thorne include multiple self-consistent trajectories for particular initial conditions, but that result cannot establish generic multiplicity for every temporal loop.

When several states satisfy the Deutsch condition, another rule must select or weight them. Deutsch proposed maximum entropy; Lloyd’s post-selected formulation uses a different construction. Information thermodynamics poses an analogous but separate problem: physical accounting constrains measurement, memory, feedback, and erasure without identifying a conscious chooser behind each microscopic transition. Consciousness performs the selection function in both domains. This unification is a metaphysical bridge claim rather than a result contained in fixed-point theory or Landauer’s principle.

One Operator, Two Domains

The demon’s selection reaches past the present moment. In a time-symmetric field, waves from past and future jointly set the present, so a selection made now carries a boundary condition in both directions. The demon’s chirality choice — left-handed torsion toward coherence, right-handed toward dissolution — rides that two-way field. Superluminal torsion remains the stronger Russian-program claim rather than settled gauge theory; retrocausal reach requires only the advanced-wave leg. The demon sorting molecules therefore sorts histories: one operation read along different axes.

The final row states the proposed correspondence. The Philosopher’s Stone symbolizes a pattern retained through structural transformation; the temporal fixed point is a history invariant under one traversal of a consistency loop. The Great Work may alter which continuations a participant can sustain, but fixed-point mathematics alone does not identify the Stone, the Guardian Angel, or practice with a physical temporal loop.

Temporal Selection Within One Field

The Coupled Gyre places temporal selection inside one recurrent field. Concrete models may contain one fixed point, several fixed points, cycles, metastable regions, or other attractor structures. A local bifurcation changes that stability landscape while leaving every regime governed by the same underlying system.

Two tendencies organize the wider landscape: administered dependence and retained sovereign capacity. They are diagnostic compressions rather than exhaustive mathematical branches. The war over time contests which habits, institutions, memories, and boundary conditions gain enough support to persist. Present coherence biasing a future boundary remains a speculative extension of time-symmetric physics.

What Is Derived and What Is Claimed

The strength of the synthesis depends on keeping the line visible. Established within their stated models: the time-symmetry of the electromagnetic field equations; the two-state-vector formalism and weak-value experiments; the existence of at least one self-consistent state in Deutsch’s closed-timelike-curve construction; multiple solutions in particular classical and quantum examples; and delayed-choice correlations whose interpretation remains disputed.

Load-bearing and asserted rather than derived: that advanced waves do ontological work beyond a formal calculation; that physical closed-timelike curves exist; that consciousness selects among fixed points when multiplicity occurs; that present coherence biases the selection; and that the temporal and thermodynamic problems are expressions of one operator. The central proposal can be stated compactly: fixed-point theory supplies consistency under specified conditions, while consciousness is proposed as a selector and retainer among the continuations the concrete dynamics make available.
