"The lips of wisdom are closed, except to the ears of Understanding."
Hermeticism is the philosophical tradition tracing to Hermes Trismegistus, the legendary author of the Emerald Tablet. Whether Hermes was a god, a man, or a title for an initiatory lineage, the teachings attributed to him describe operational principles of reality.
The Kybalion, a 1908 text by "Three Initiates," synthesizes Hermetic teachings into seven principles. These describe how the universe operates, from the nature of mind to the law of cause and effect, providing a practical framework for conscious living.
Reality is fundamentally mental, not material. The universe exists within an infinite mind, and all phenomena are thoughts within that mind. This principle underlies all others: if reality is mental, then mind can work upon reality.
There is correspondence between the laws of different planes of existence. What happens on the macrocosmic level reflects on the microcosmic, and vice versa. By understanding one level, we can infer the nature of others.
Everything in existence is in motion, vibrating at various frequencies. Matter is energy vibrating slowly; spirit is energy vibrating rapidly. The difference between manifestations is rate of vibration.
Opposites are identical in nature, differing only in degree. Hot and cold are the same thing (temperature) at different points on a scale. This principle allows transmutation: hate can become love by shifting degree.
Everything manifests a measured motion: a swing to the right followed by a swing to the left. There is always action and reaction, rise and fall. Understanding rhythm allows one to minimize extremes.
Nothing happens by chance. Every effect has a cause; every cause produces an effect. Chance is merely unrecognized cause. Masters rise to a higher plane and become Causers rather than the caused.
Gender manifests on all planes: physical, mental, spiritual. Masculine is the initiating, projecting principle; Feminine is the receiving, gestating principle. Creation requires both. Gender is not merely sex.
True, without falsehood, certain and most true: That which is above is like that which is below, and that which is below is like that which is above, to accomplish the miracles of the One Thing.
And as all things were from One, by the mediation of One, so all things arose from this One Thing by adaptation. The Sun is its father; the Moon its mother; the Wind carries it in its belly; the Earth is its nurse.
Separate the Earth from the Fire, the subtle from the gross, gently and with great ingenuity. It ascends from Earth to Heaven and descends again to Earth, and receives the power of the superiors and the inferiors.
Thus you will have the glory of the whole world. Therefore all obscurity will flee from you. This is the strong force of all forces, overcoming every subtle and penetrating every solid thing. Thus the world was created.

Hermetic philosophy connects to alchemy, astrology, Kabbalah, and Gnosticism. Each topic opens further dimensions of the tradition.
Using the principles of Polarity and Mentalism to shift mental states. Transmuting fear to courage by moving along the emotional spectrum.
Using "as above, so below" to decode the unknown. Studying microcosm to understand macrocosm, and vice versa.
Using will to polarize at the desired point, refusing to be swung by the pendulum. Rising above rhythmic pulls through conscious choice.
Raising or lowering vibration through thought, breath, and environment. Entraining with higher states to elevate consciousness.
