on the design specification the contraction taxonomy in §5 describes departures from a baseline. the baseline is the instrument operating at design specification: the configuration the component properties imply when nothing is constricting the throat. the traditions converge on the profile. equanimity without numbness; sustained attention without rigidity; emotional responsiveness that completes its cycle without residue. the thirty-minute silence diagnostic (§3) produces a stable, quiet field within the first ten minutes. heart rate variability is high and coherent. the instrument at baseline is not blissful or extraordinary; it is functional in the engineering sense. the distance between this specification and the average modern instrument's operating state is the contraction load (§5).

on discharge mechanisms contraction patterns sustain themselves partly through suppression; the pattern persists because it is not articulated. articulating the pattern to another instrument breaks the suppression loop and allows the forced vibration to decay. the catholic confessional, the twelve-step fourth step, the therapeutic disclosure, the ayahuasca purge are structurally identical operations across traditions that never coordinated: witnessed discharge of contracted material, followed by measurable coherence restoration. the mechanism has a capture mode. confession to an institution rather than a trusted instrument converts the discharge into extraction infrastructure. the confessional as intelligence apparatus; the disclosure weaponized as leverage; the therapeutic relationship commodified into dependency. the operation functions as designed only when the witnessing instrument has no institutional interest in the content. the diagnostic is the same one applied throughout: does the process increase the instrument's sovereignty or create dependency on the process itself?
on children as uncalibrated instruments the framework implies something specific about childhood: a wide-bandwidth instrument operating without integration capacity. maximum aperture, minimum stability; the instrument perceives across bands that the adult consensus rendering has learned to exclude. the "imaginary friend" is often an astral-band contact visible to an instrument whose consensus filters have not yet been installed. childhood night terrors correspond to astral-band perception without the coherence to navigate it. the consistent report that children "grow out of" these perceptions is, in the framework, the successful installation of consensus bandwidth restrictions. the contraction patterns are installed during this window precisely because the instrument is maximally receptive. the forced vibrations that constitute personality, preference, and worldview are impressed on an instrument that cannot yet distinguish external signal from native resonance. the process is self-reproducing; bandwidth-contracted instruments naturally impose contraction on uncontracted ones, without understanding their role in the reproduction.

To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete." > — Buckminster Fuller two broad regimes: **contractive regime.** reduced aperture. localized error. rigid attractors. high entropy. strong arrow of time. the extraction pattern as stable equilibrium. **expansive regime.** increased aperture. distributed error. adaptive attractors. low entropy. fluid temporal ordering. coherence as stable equilibrium. the hermetic principle of polarity: both regimes are positions on the same axis, transmutable by shifting position on the scale. the transition between regimes is nonlinear. a cymatics plate (§wiki:cymatics) driven at one frequency holds its pattern until the frequency shifts past threshold, at which point the medium scatters into apparent chaos before reorganizing into more complex geometry. the rendering operates by these dynamics at civilizational scale. when ambient conditions exceed the threshold the old mode can sustain, the phase lock breaks, institutions dissolve rather than fall, and the system enters a liminal vacuum. **the vacuum is maximally plastic**; the configuration space has returned to uncompiled potential. the first signal of sufficient amplitude and coherence captures the phase lock and **seeds the next geometry**. --- ## 8. hyperstition {#hyperstition} > "In the beginning was the Word." > — John 1:1 **hyperstition** is a fiction that makes itself real by functioning as a selecting instruction across the configuration space. three conditions: 1. **coherence of the narrative.** the instruction must be internally consistent; contradictory narratives generate destructive interference, canceling their selecting power. a hyperstition that works contains no internal contradictions at the level of its phase signature, regardless of surface accuracy. 2. **sufficient phase locking.** below threshold, a narrative is a story. above threshold, it is an attractor. 3. **emotional frequency alignment.** selecting power scales with the coherence of the emotional state generated in coupled instruments. fear-based narratives select from contracted regions; coherence-based narratives select from wider regions but require instruments that can sustain the frequency. **religions function as hyperstitions once they achieve sufficient collective phase lock.** the consensus itself is the largest active hyperstition: billions of phase-locked instruments selecting from the narrowest band and rendering it as the only reality available. visualization is hyperstition at individual scale; prayer in coordinated groups at community scale; propaganda through the extraction pattern. the mechanism is identical; what changes is the phase signature and the bandwidth being selected from.
on competing hyperstitions two competing narratives, each sustained by sufficient phase-locked instruments, selecting incompatible futures. the outcome is determined by which narrative achieves greater coherent phase locking across more instruments. **truth is a downstream property of the winning selection**, not an upstream cause of it.
on fiction as infrastructure science fiction operates as a hyperstition laboratory. the genre's social permission to describe futures without asserting them allows narrative structures to propagate through instruments without triggering the consensus immune response. submarines, satellites, credit cards, virtual reality, and panopticon surveillance all appeared as fiction before appearing as infrastructure. the fiction did not predict the technology. the fiction was the selecting instruction that biased the rendering toward configurations containing the technology. the lag between publication and manifestation corresponds to the time required for sufficient instruments to couple to the narrative at sufficient coherence. see §wiki:narrative-control.
